Prom Night '08: The Review

The ladies strutted in their ravishing gowns embellished with captivating accessories as they entered the grand ballroom. Some opted for a scanty outfit, a clear sign of the effects of the economic downturn. The men encapsulated the formality of the event with their coats, ties and leather shoes. It was a resplendent masquerade night to be remembered for the rest of their lives.

The Prom Night was a culmination of the hard work and determination of the 23rd Student Council. The students, including me, had high expectations for the event. In this review, I will sum up the thoughts and feelings by members of the audience. Therefore, be prepared for the criticisms too.

The emcee for the night was Mr Richardo from Adrenalin Events. On a scale of one to ten, I think he deserved a six. Firstly, he managed to host the event smoothly with only one or two slips of the tongue. Secondly, he was very enthusiastic. He passed the energy to the audience with his humourous lines and consistently tried to maintain the level of enthusiasm by encouraging us to scream and support our team members during the games.

However, as the night turned colder, the energy started to wane. Our short attention spans got the better of us and we soon began to ignore the games and took pictures with our friends instead. The emcee's jokes started to turn lame as he blathered on and started to create name jokes. In short, although he did try to keep the zealous crowd alive, in the end it was just an ephemeral fervour.

If I could pick the most entertaining performer for the night, I would definitely choose Ami Yousoff as the winner hands down. In fact, most if not all of my friends agreed that he was the star of the night. No one expected him to krump vociferously on stage during one of the games. It was hilarious and he was deservedly rewarded with a standing ovation. And oh, his awkward gait while imitating Indiana Jones was amusing too. This funnyman sure has guts, I told myself.

I think the food and beverages served were all right. Overall, I would rate a B+ for them. My personal favourite was the fish dish (I can't remember the exact name of the dish). The jellyfish dish was unexpected and we were thrilled to taste it for the very first time (Haha). However, I have to agree with some of my friends that knives should have been provided so that we could cut the meat with ease and avoid a situation whereby the meat might jump off the plate suddenly!

I thought the door gifts were reasonable. I received many complains that they were inadequate and unattractive. To me, the greatest souvenir that I brought home from the night was the set of photos that I took together with my gorgeous best friends. Door gifts do not really matter to us.

Now here comes the (nasty) criticisms...

Firstly, there should have been more transparency on how the nominees for the Prom king and queen were selected. I received two versions of the voting process - one told me that a team of councillors chose them but the other informed me that only one councillor had the power to choose the nominees. Which is true I do not know, but whatever it is, it sure made some attendees slightly unhappy. I am not disputing the winners of the Prom king and queen because I believe they looked amazing and truly deserved it. In fact, my whole table voted for them. However, there is another huge group of people who felt that they should have been given the right to nominate the Prom king and queen. Anyway, congratulations to Hafiz and Mae for winning the Prom king and queen contest respectively that night!

Secondly, the event was not filled with heart-pumping or spellbinding performances. Most of the musicians who took the stage were accompanied by acoustic guitars and a soothing voice. The pace of the event was a bit too relaxed. Perhaps, the event organizers were trying too hard to retain the serenity of the masquerade night. Nevertheless, it would definitely be a lot better if a powerful voice or the sharp sounds from a violin would suddenly overwhelm the entire ballroom. A lucky draw segment would help too. Overall, the entertainment value was low.

Thirdly, several members of the audience were displeased that some students (the minority) actually walked around and took pictures in the middle of the ballroom, therefore blocking the view of the rest of the attendees seated at the back. I believe they were too eager to take a group photo together, so much so that they forgot that there are people seated at the back who wanted to view the performances on stage (especially during the Prom king and queen segment! Oh boy...). Not too much of a problem I agree, but still a little courtesy would make a huge difference.

Next, I think masquerade masks should have been provided during the event. This suggestion was actually brought forward by my classmate as well as one of the readers in this blog who mentioned how masks were provided during his graduation night which coincidentally used the same theme as ours. In my opinion, we have to be realistic when it came to this. I am pretty confident that the councillors intended to do so, but the lack of funds did not permit them to provide the masks. Nonetheless, a special counter to loan a few masks for photo shoots could have been set up.

Finally, some of the attendees commented that the the dance floor should have been opened for a longer period of time. They argued that the time allocated for the final segment was too short and therefore unsatisfactory. I believe the event organizers had no choice but to end the dance segment early because the ballroom was booked for a specified duration of time and they could not exceed it.

It was definitely a fantastic night, but to describe it as magical seems superfluous. Nevertheless, (most importantly) thank you to the 23rd Student Council for making the event happen.

How do I get there?
You need to take the train (East West Line). Stop at Tiong Bahru station. For more information, I suggest you click HERE. There are numbered bullets at the right-hand side of the map. Click the number 4 to view how you have to navigate your way from the MRT station to the hotel. If it is too complicated, grab a few friends and take a cab there together!

When does registration begin?
Registration starts at 6.30pm.

Do I have to wear masks?
Ermmm...I guess so.

Where can I buy the masks?

EXCLUSIVE: Prom Night Details Released!

What can we expect for Prom Night this year? Find the answer to this question and more in this exclusive interview with Felina Bte Fadzli Tan of 08A06, the overall in charge of the event of the year.


Why Midnight Masquerade?
As a committee, we chose the theme Midnight Masquerade because we feel that Midnight is a time which exudes a kind of mystical aura. Masquerade, on the other hand signifies a form of metamorphosis. And so collectively, Midnight Masquerade is a theme which encapsulates a magical change.

What food and beverage will be served?
The J2s will be served an eight-course dinner. The menu, however, will vary. It will depend whether the table is a Muslim one or a Chinese one. But we (the Prom committee) can assure you the food will not be bad :)
The event will be strictly non-alcoholic as we have to abide to college regulations.

What kind of performances will be lined up?
The performance schedule is currently still in the works. But the J2s can expect performances which are heartfelt and sincere :)

Who is the host for this year’s Prom Night?
The college has decided to engage an events company to help with the running of the Prom. The emcee will be someone from the company, Adrenalin Events. The name of the emcee is Richardo and trust us (the Prom committee), he is a really nice chap and can be quite a joker (not in a corny way)!

P/S: He was Prom King of his college back when he was in Temasek JC.

What prizes can we expect for the Prom Queen and Prom King?
All the prizes given to the Prom Queen and Prom King will come in pairs (his and hers). At the moment, we are looking into skincare products, perfumes, vouchers, and possibly timepieces :)

Are you and your team nervous for the big night?
Oh hell yeah we are! The word nervous itself is truly an understatement. We know how important this event is and we really really really (x 1 000 000) do not want to screw it up for the J2s! We will do what we can to put together an awesome Prom which will be so unforgettable (in a good way!) and the memories will stay etched in your hearts for eternity.

SPECIAL: Why The Post-Prom Party Was Not Approved

I sent an enquiry to Ms Dawn Ng, one of the teachers-in-charge of Student Council, and she had kindly agreed to explain why this year's post-Prom party was not approved by the college.

Dear Ms Ng,

Is it possible for you to reveal why the college disapprove the post-prom party this year. A number of JC2s are puzzled why it was approved last year and not this year? I remembered posters of last year's post-prom party was all over the college.Thank you. = )

Her response:

Hi Azhar,

In response to your enquiry, here is an explanation why we did not approve the post-prom this year.

Firstly, the college did not approve of a post-prom last year.

It was more like there was an external party that was privately planned and the organizers asked the school admin if they could just paste posters in our college. It was not a collaboration with the college. The students who were involved were also involved in their personal capacity.

Secondly, that post-prom was a strictly non-alcoholic event, which then makes it a lot less complicated. The one proposed this year allows alcohol to be sold. This is not something we want to encourage regardless of whatever measures are taken.

Thirdly, last year's post prom was not a council event. This year, they wanted to collaborate with us but were rejected. The students involved then went further to bypass the teachers and the committee to get the councillors involved in publicity, despite the fact they have been rejected 2 days earlier.

Original, unedited Post-Prom message delivered to JC2 students:

"Hello class reps! Please please please help spread the word to your class that there will be a post prom part at Zouk after prom on the first of Dec. Pre-sales are going at 20 whereas ticket at the door is 25. Tickets are limited to 600 and tpjcians are allowed to bring their friends along(16 and above). Doors will be opened at 10 and the first 300 will receive a goodie bag. Every ticket is entitled to one free drink(alcoholic). There will be 2 house band performances. A booth will be set up in front of the council room for the sales of tickets. It will be open from 29th Sept to 10 Oct."

No Post-Prom Party For JC2s This Year

This year's post-Prom party was 'crashed' even before it began. The head of Student Welfare department, Mr Ong Wee Hong, had announced to the JC2 students last Friday indicating that there will be no such events taking place on the 1st of December this year.

Details of the party were sent to the former JC2 councillors early this week via SMS. The message read:

"Hello class reps! Please please please help spread the word to your class that there will be a post prom part at Zouk after prom on the first of Dec. Pre-sales are going at 20 whereas ticket at the door is 25. Tickets are limited to 600 and tpjcians are allowed to bring their friends along(16 and above). Doors will be opened at 10 and the first 300 will receive a goodie bag. Every ticket is entitled to one free drink(alcoholic). There will be 2 house band performances. A booth will be set up in front of the council room for the sales of tickets. It will be open from 29th Sept to 10 Oct."

Nonetheless, it turned out that the event was not approved or endorsed by the college. TPJCians are also not encouraged to attend the party. The JC2 councillors have responded by retracting the original information from their fellow classmates.

It is not known who organized or sent details of the event. There are rumours that it was a councillor since the booth was to be set up in front of the council room. However, many former JC2 councillors told us that they had no idea who sent the message.

TPJC had a post-Prom party last year. The event took place at Phuture(Zouk) and attracted quite a number of students. According to a source from whosgoing.sg, the party drew more than 300 party goers. Now, that's a lot!














So please, if your class chairman had shared details of the event to you and you were not present last Friday, do remember that the party will not take place this coming December.
